Sheila
Ruth Maloney is a self-taught, contemporary folk artist.
Her primitive designs are worked in many media. Visitors
to her home began purchasing and commissioning her art
in 1959. Sheila’s fame and success have steadily
grown.
Using
traditional methods, often at hand materials, she is able
to fulfill her creative drive and make things to her
own
satisfaction. |
Sheila’s
work has been shown/hung across Canada, the United States of
America, England, Japan, Ireland, Germany and France.
Her work has been purchased by The Museum of Civilization, The
Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and recognized by the Ontario Craft
Council, The American Museum of Folk Art, New York, the Galerie
Naifs et Primitifs, Paris, France, the Wexford Arts Centre, Ireland
and The Famine Museum, Co. Roscommon, Ireland.
Sheila was selected Canada winner by the Museum of American Folk
Art, New York in a world wide quilt contest 1989 and winner of
the 1992 and 1993 Canada Trust Best Folk Art Award for her paintings.
She is the recipient of the Canada 125 Medal for her contribution
to the rise and wide success of folk art in Canada. She is also
the recipient of Ontario Arts Council Grants and Canada Council
Grants. Her sixty painting Irish series was purchased and donated
to Concordia University, Montreal . Four of her paintings are
in the prestigious Michael C. Williams Collection at the University
of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia.
Her narrative and naive paintings have captured the heart of
country and town life with truth, joy, humour, and love.
Born on a farm near Dauphin, Manitoba, Sheila grew up in Victoria,
British Columbia and has lived with her family on a small farm
near Zephyr, Ontario, Canada, since 1963.
